Winter Lodging in Garrett County and Deep Creek, Maryland

Published: November 21, 2019

Now that we're officially in "snow season" (we had our first "big" storm earlier this month), I thought it might be appropriate to share some winter lodging ideas for Garrett County and Deep Creek. Because who wouldn't want to get snowed in while staying in a tiny cabin, luxurious yurt or lakefront B&B out here in the mountains!?

1. Well-Equipped and Affordable Cabins at Herrington Manor State Park in Oakland

First up, these super cute, very affordable cabins! They're fully-furnished with wood stoves, bathrooms and showers, and kitchens that are stocked with a refrigerator, coffeemaker, oven, microwave, and dishes! Also, I just looked...there is no cabin over $100.

These cabins are picture-perfect covered in snow and I think they'd make a pretty perfect place to stay this winter. (I snapped these pictures this past March during a late-season snow storm.) There's also an on-site snow tubing hill that's an easy walk from the cabins.

2. Tiny Cabins at Blue Moon Rising on Deep Creek Lake

I don't know about you, but getting snowed in while staying in a tiny cabin in the woods sounds pretty darn cozy. The only thing harder than trying to plan a stay for when it actually snows is choosing which cabin to stay in! There are 14 total and no two are alike. My friend Hannah and I had the pleasure of staying in the "Morning Glory" cabin last year. We weren't snowed in and we didn't get to explore the trails, so we definitely want to go back.

Check out what BMR has to offer here. And if you talk to Rob or Katherine, tell them Jessica Fike sent you. 🙂

3. Luxurious Yurts and Dog-Friendly Cabins at Savage River Lodge in Frostburg

It's hard to think about a winter overnight here in our corner of Maryland without mentioning SRL! While it's a little farther from the lake (on the far northeastern corner of the county), it's absolutely worth the drive, in my opinion. I mean, just look at the road that leads you to it!

Not only does SRL have spacious and well-equipped cabins that are dog-friendly, they also have YURTS! Luxurious yurts! SRL has an on-site lodge with a top-notch restaurant and the coziest bar and fireplace atmosphere. This is another place I wouldn't mind getting snowed in at.

4. The Inn at Deep Creek at the lake

I haven't yet stayed here, but I was inside a few years ago for a Chamber After Hours event and really enjoyed its cozy atmosphere. It's also within walking distance of some great little destinations here at the like: the movie theater, Casselman Cafe & Bakery, Arrowhead Market, Honi-Honi, and UNO's. A first-time visitor to Deep Creek that I randomly met at Walmart two weekends ago stayed at the Inn and was very happy!

5. Lake Pointe Inn Bed & Breakfast at the lake

I discovered this sweet place almost three years ago and had the pleasure of exploring the inside when some clients of mine came over for a getaway from Morgantown. The B&B is lakefront, they offer sunset boat rides when it's warm (oh wait, this is a winter time post...scratch that, ha!), it has a big living room space with a big fireplace, a snack bar with occasional homemade marshmallows, and my clients praised the food saying it was one of the best breakfasts they've had. While Lake Pointe is considered "luxury lodging" and the room rate does reflect that, the amenities listed above and the complimentary drinks found in the refrigerators throughout the building let you know you're paying for something special. I should also mention that Lake Pointe is located in a community full of homes directly across from Wisp.

There are five suggestions above but I would feel badly if I didn't mention all the other lodging options we've got here...because we've got a lot of great ones! Wisp Resort, Lakestar Lodge, The Lodges at Sunset and Lakeside Village, rental homes with Taylor-Made and Railey Vacations, Suites at Silver Tree, condos at Will O the Wisp, cabins at New Germany State Park, Ella's Enchanted Treehouses, Haley Farm Inn & Retreat Center, Oak-Mar Motel, Stillwater Haven, North Glade Inn, Wild Yough Glamping Huts. (Google and you'll find them. 🙂 )

Overall, it's pretty darn easy to come to Garrett County and Deep Creek for a winter overnight. And with our track record of #TundraofMaryland type weather between now and early April, I think it'll be pretty darn easy to get snowed in while you're here, too. Cross fingers!
