Open for the Season!

Published: June 5, 2019

Garrett County is a four-season area with things to do and see no matter the time of year. But the bulk of our activity lies in the cold and warm months, so winter and summer are when most opportunities seem to be “open” and available. Here’s a short list of some places that you’ll now find open for the summer season!

Lakeside Creamery

One of the most well-known (and delicious!) spots at the lake, the Creamery is open from mid-April until Autumn Glory weekend in October. When their “open” for business flags start waving, you know it’s almost summertime! Local Insider Tip: Try to visit during their last weekend in October when ice cream pints are half off! Also, their Chocolate Raspberry Truffle flavor is my favorite.

Deep Creek Lake State Park

With the only public beach access at the lake, DCL State Park is quite a hot spot in summer! The main gate is closed during snowmobile season, which runs from December 15th to March 15th each year. During the summer, the park can be enjoyed daily from 8am to sunset, with the trails being accessible at sunrise.

Deep Creek Lavender Farm

I can actually see part of their space from my back window! This unique farm is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. During their prime bloom, June 28th to July 8th, they’ll be open daily from 10am to 5pm. When the farm is open, you can enjoy both the relaxing atmosphere of the lavender field, as well as shop in their lavender store. And make sure you chat with Anne, farm owner, while you’re there. She’s such a friendly and excited friend of mine!

Katie’s Ice Cream

Katie’s is definitely a place loved by the locals, so if you enjoy soft-serve, take note! This ice cream stand is located on 219, just north of the lake right before the 42 turnoff. Their exact open days and times seem to vary, but now that Memorial Day has passed, you can definitely grab one of their treats on most days in both the afternoon and evening.
